Self evaluation examples that actually land
Most self evaluations fail the same way: they describe activity instead of outcome, and they are written from memory in the last hour before the deadline. Below are paired examples - the version people usually write, and a stronger version built on evidence you can point at.
Delivery and outcomes
The most common gap in a self evaluation is effort without outcome. Name the thing you shipped, then the change it caused.
Worked hard on the billing migration this year.
Led the billing migration across three teams, cutting failed payments from 4.1% to 1.6% over two quarters and removing roughly 20 support tickets a week.
Helped improve our reporting.
Rebuilt the weekly reporting pack so it generates automatically, saving the team about 6 hours a week and letting the leadership review move a day earlier.
Delivered my projects on time.
Delivered 11 of 12 committed projects on schedule, and flagged the one slipping six weeks early with a revised plan the sponsor accepted.
Leadership and influence
Leadership counts whether or not you manage people. Show scope: who changed their behaviour because of you.
Mentored some junior colleagues.
Mentored two junior analysts through their first independent client work; both now run their own accounts and one was promoted in the last cycle.
Took the lead on our team process.
Proposed and ran a fortnightly triage session that the wider department has since adopted, reducing unassigned work in the backlog by around half.
Collaboration and communication
Be specific about the friction you removed, not how nice you are to work with.
I communicate well with other teams.
Set up a shared handover doc with the operations team after two launches went out with mismatched dates; there have been no repeat incidents in nine months.
Supported colleagues when needed.
Covered a colleague's client portfolio for five weeks during parental leave alongside my own, with all renewals landing on time.
Growth areas, said honestly
A self evaluation with no weaknesses reads as either unaware or defensive. Name a real gap and the concrete thing you are doing about it.
I could improve my time management.
I take on new requests too readily, which pushed two deadlines in Q2. Since June I have routed all new asks through our intake process and have not missed a committed date since.
I want to develop technically.
My data modelling is the weakest part of my toolkit, so I have taken on the pricing model rebuild with a senior reviewer rather than avoiding that work.
How to write yours in about ten minutes
- List everything you finished this period, however small.
- For each one, add the number or the changed behaviour that followed it.
- Cut anything you cannot evidence if your manager asks a follow-up question.
- Group what remains under the competencies your role is actually assessed on.
- Add one honest gap with the specific action you have already taken.
Or stop writing it from memory
Look at you go is a private career record. You do a 90-second check-in each week, it pulls out the evidence, scores it for strength and recency, and maps it to the competencies you are reviewed against. When review season arrives, your self evaluation is assembled from things you already said - with the proof attached.
